    pwordleHappy New Year – we’re back for 2012, with a request for your thoughts on digital copyright, and a great review for you from 2011.

    Arts Professional published their 2011 Ticketing & Technology Supplement, featuring an overview of the landscape from AmbITion consultant Roger Tomlinson and a guide to working with web developers by Beth Aplin. Worth checking out if you’re involved with your cultural organisation’s sales and box office functions for the details. If you’re a director or CEO, the guide is also essential reading to understanding where your culture business could improve audience development and business model practices.     Digital Copyright Consultation
    On 22 November Business Secretary Vince Cable announced the appointment of Richard Hooper to lead a feasibility study on developing a Digital Copyright Exchange (DCE) in the UK. The DCE feasibility study will consider options for developing a functional digital market in rights clearance and a source of information about rights ownership, as recommended by the Hargreaves Review of Intellectual Property and Growth and accepted by the Government.

    Views are being sought, and we are keen to gather your responses and respond collectively from Scotland’s cultural sectors.
    We will provide evidence for whether whether we agree with the ‘Hargreaves Hypothesis’ – that the current copyright licensing system is not fit for purpose; and secondly our evidence will show whether we agree with Hargreaves’ proposed definitions, including the market definition.   3. Digital access to culture now mainstream says new UK research

    Digital access to the arts and culture is extending, rather than replacing, the live experience of the arts, and the Internet is now playing a much broader role in arts engagement than simply acting as a marketing channel. A significant minority use it not only to consume and share artistic content, but also to create it; and over half use social networking sites regularly. These latest findings from a major survey of 2,000 adult Internet users appear to “confirm that engaging with the arts through digital media is now a mainstream activity”. So reports Arts Professional, announcing the Arts Council England, Arts & Business & Museums Libraries and Archives council commissioned report by MTM “Digital Audiences for Arts & Culture“.

  4. Ambition Scotland’s Big Announcement!

    hanFollowing a successful launch event in Edinburgh yesterday (the first of two), the Amb:IT:ion Scotland team is delighted to announce more details on the programme’s participants and partnerships.

    The Scottish Arts Council have invested £1million in the Amb:IT:ion Scotland programme. Fifty-five Arts organisations have been selected to receive consultancy.

    Fifteen partner organisations will benefit from five days consultancy with a specialist adviser who will conduct an in-depth audit and diagnostic of current digital activity and then work with the organisation to develop a business case to submit for further Scottish Arts Council funding to implement digital developments.

    Partner organisations include:

    Forty associate organisations will benefit from one day’s consultancy with a specialist adviser, who will conduct a mini-diagnostic and help organisations to develop their ideas further, either to action initiatives within their own resources or seek alternative sources of support to implement their plans.

    Associate organisations include:

    A third group of Involved organisations will take a self-guided journey through digital development by accessing the free resources available from the Amb:IT:ion Scotland programme. Free events, case studies and publications can be accessed by any arts organisation or creative business by exploring the project website or joining the social network.

    Partnerships

    Scottish Centre for Enabling Technologies (SC4ET)

    Working with SC4ET, Amb:IT:ion Scotland will offer associate members additional free and impartial advice on adopting a wide range of technologies, through up to 10 days access to information, advice and guidance. In addition, some organisations may apply for SC4ET’s ‘Feasibility Study Grant’, and could potentially receive up to £5000 or match funded support.

    Higher Education Institutes

    Edinburgh Napier University, University of West Scotland, Robert Gordon University and the University of Abertay have joined the Amb:IT:ion Scotland programme to facilitate a series of internships. The internships will offer Amb:IT:ion Scotland associate organisations the opportunity to host students, from their Computing/Digital Media, Creative Industry, Business and Arts and Media & Computer Games schools respectively. The internships are available from summer of 2010 and will extend student learning beyond traditional academic environments and offer organisations access to young, cutting-edge skills and talents from this newly-emerging industry.
