Between 2009-2014, the AmbITion Scotland programme helped Scotland’s creative, cultural, heritage, and arts community keep focus on their core mission and purpose in a world continuously impacted by disruptive digital technologies. The £2.1m national programme provided capability, confidence, capacity building, learning opportunities and funding. It facilitated new connections within the digital media, technology and higher education sectors. This enabled Scottish arts, culture and heritage organisations to take advantage of the opportunities of digital technologies, becoming more efficient in their operations. It has helped organisations become more innovative in their business models, experimental in their art and content creation, and effective in their engagement with the public.
The AmbITion Scotland national programme was managed by Culture Republic in partnership with The AmbITion Approach’s creators, Rudman Consulting. The programme has been supported by The National Lottery funds via Creative Scotland.
AmbITion Scotland’s impact:
- learning events – 46 events since January 2012 with to nearly 3000 sector professionals attending from over 425 organisations right across Scotland, many of them webcast live and on-demand for the widest possible access;
- direct support – the Make:IT:Happen fund awarded 71 grants totalling £478,329 to 59 arts and cultural organisations in Scotland to support new ideas, and develop digital strategies and approaches. It received almost 200 applications over its 16-month run;
- online learning materials – toolkits, learning journeys, case studies, filmed documentaries, video archives of seminars and podcasts – all of which have driven over 17,000 unique visitors each year to AmbITion Scotland’s website; and
- a peer network – a tremendous resource for peer-to-peer sharing and learning with over 1,250 members online, supplemented by personal brokering and more intimate in-person events.
In the context of Creative Scotland’s Spring 2014 review of funding programmes and overall strategy, the AmbITion Scotland programme came to a close. Digital remains a crosscutting theme throughout Creative Scotland’s draft strategic plan and Creative Scotland’s approach to supporting digital development will be published in due course.
